Well, Social Media sites at this time, are unavoidable to market your website along with Search Engine Marketing but social media sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon are nofollow sites (which means your link posted on FaceBook will not be crawled by search engines like Google and ultimately to not index in SERP (Search Engine Results Page) .. )
So, if you are about to write an info-rich article and post it into FaceBook, etc for the sake of improving your website ranking -- Don't do this.
But you can still get dofollow links also from the nofollow social media sites; but how ? Here are the tips;
1- Connect with mutual people with interest and niche on social media sites. Do not crazily add/follow people.
2- Promote their content and interact with the most-active people with your interest and niche.
3- Just do not promote your content to piss off your friends/followers.
4- Make your account shadowing to your niche and interest by Likes, Share and your Profile to attract people from the same niche and interest which may make them to linkback to your blog/forum/website.
5- Keep your social appearance active.
6- Rather interact with similar people to your niche than promoting your content.
