Yep. I blog for both reasons too. I have some blogs that I run just because I love talking about those topics - It is like a form of therapy for me I guess. And I have other blogs that are more serious and I produce them strictly to make money with.
When I first started out many years ago, I thought I was blogging to make money. But eventually I realized that the things I was doing weren't really the things I needed to do to make money. So even though I told myself I was doing it to make money, I think the real reason I was doing it was because I enjoyed it so much. I think an awful lot of bloggers are doing that very same thing to themselves. They tell themselves they are in it for the money, yet all the actions they take are not the actions a person would take to actually make money.
For example, if you create a blog about blogging, you are going to have a very tough time monetizing it. You will need to create your own product to monetize it with and it will be hard to sell that product to bloggers. You could get into affiliate marketing with a blog about blogging too, but there aren't that many great affiliate products that you can effectively sell to your blogger followers. At least that has been my experience.
So all these various people out there who blog about blogging and say that they are doing it to make money, for the most part, I think they are fooling themselves.
It is much easier to make money in other niches that are not related to blogging at all or related to internet marketing, affiliate marketing or making money online. The best niches I have discovered were all way outside the realm of internet marketing, blogging, yada yada.
There is nothing wrong with blogging for fun. But don't fool yourself into thinking that you are going to make money because you enjoy blogging. If you want to really make money you have to think of it like a business. Do what brings in the cash.
