Sure, there are a lot of people that still use Joomla. It has never been as popular as Wordpress is, but it is a good CMS.

Joomla is pretty big and vast cms compare to WordPress. People find WordPress quite easy to use than Joomla. So, if you are completely noob than go with WordPress.

WordPress is definitely my choice. That's because of several reasons like the availability of information, themes, plugins, services, etc.

I am going to be looking into Joomla as well as Drupal to build some other sites with and kind of feel it out. I have installed both in the past and wasn't real happy with the back-end, but that was when I did have as much experience working with that type of software. Now that I have learned a lot in general, I am going to be doing a Joomla and Drupal site as a test bed so to speak.

However, I think that for the time being, WordPress is my choice.

From my personal experience, I'd say they have different uses.

My previous employer, was a magazine. The magazine originally ran as a weekly from 1956 to 1970 and was relaunched as a Monthly print and Digital Daily edition.
The main website, was designed using Wordpress as the backend.
The archives were uploaded to a Drupal based setup, and a Idea-sharing area was set up using Joomla.

I agree that they can have different uses, but they all can do many of that same things and get similar results.

Using all three? Seems a little odd and like more work then needed. Never heard of that before.

How well did using all three work out?

I never thought about that, but people can get a free site with joomla.com, just to get a little bit of a feel for Joomla.

Is the Joomla version they use on joomla.com basically the same as the self-hosted software as far as features and capabilities?

Joomla was my first love so to speak. I used it for many years, since it was Mambo. But later on I moved to WP for new projects and let the older ones run on joomla. It felt annoyingly restrictive at the beginning.

Wp seems to be more active in terms of development and, right now, you can do almost everything you can do with Joomla.

I used Joomla a very long time ago as a portal for a private server, it stopped there. Never used it again after that as I tend to stick to WordPress.

WP all day, every day! I always hated Joomla. WP is the leader of the CMSs and there is a reason for that. Yes, it has it's cons but nothing in life is perfect.

Does anyone of using some of the flat file CMS?

Many enterprise are still and will use Joomla/Drupal while many smaller companies use Wordpress because of the wide theme/plugin eco.
