Based on personal experience, the best way to increase traffic for my websites is social media promotion and marketing.

I used to ignore social media and didn't realize just how much targeted traffic you can get by using it. I have just started using it to increase my website traffic but have seen nice increases for all of my sites that I have done social media promoting on.

I like social media marketing because it's very easy to do and the increase in traffic happens rater fast compared to some other methods of increasing traffic.

No, I haven't used paid advertising. I just market/promote my content for my websites. On Twitter (my best traffic source from social media) I post the headlines or some other related Tweet message and links to the content the Tweets are about. I also post them on Facebook and Google+.

Social Media sites, SEO, Blog commenting is some of the best, effective and free ways to generate quality traffic for your website. I personally use these methods and find it very helpful.

I think social media, guest blogging is a good way to increase traffic on your site. But I suggest you to also look for some good advertising networks and also think about offline marketing. There are many tricks of offline marketing which require pennies or no money. Like banner marketing, website name at the back of your friends, relatives and your cars etc.
