What is the best way to prevent Spam Comments in WordPress?

I've got a problem in my popular WordPress sites. The spam bots have sniffed them out and now they're regularly sending spam comments to my different articles. I have a register option in my websites and I've seen a lot of users registered and spamming comments left and right. I know these are bots though. I have temporarily disabled the comments section in some of my sites until I resolve the problem.

Do you know how to stop these bots from sending me trash comments every day? Is there a plugin that could be used (preferably free)? I want to open my comments section because there are real people who like to post comments there but the bots are just too fast in spamming, promoting me to halt of comment posting. I need help. :crazy:

I know how annoying such bots and spammers are. I also had a blog that was receiving an insane amount of spam until I started using some of the ''anti'' spam plugins for my WordPress. Therefore I can completely relate to your frustration, especially if you had to close the commenting ability completely.
