Should I start my career in SEO or SEM?

Hi all, I am still new to internet marketing. I have just completed some courses in this industry, where my job was planning in on-page SEO of the websites. I had not much to do. Now as I am looking for full time job, what should I start with SEO, SMM or SEM?
Which ones get paid better?

Please share your thoughts!
