Reasons for decreasing indexed pages in google?

Hello,
I don't know reasons why my indexed pages got decreased in google when checking site: command ?
can you tell me suggestions to increase indexed pages in google back ?

To increase the indexing of the pages we have to create quality backlinks and to do that one has to maintain unique content in our website.

That is not usual thing unless when your site has problems or you did not create a sitemap but you can check with webmaster tools if the site has unfollowed pages, if it has then you must has changed the permalink settings.

Indexing may go down when you have over optimized a webpage or you have used a duplicate content.

I agree with you it may be a possible reason of decreasing indexed pages in Google or the links you have made must have been deleted.
