You are planning to beat your competitor. You must follow the advance strategy to follow your competitor. Like keyword, Back-links etc.
-try free alexa tool to get ideas of top webpages and source of traffic of your competitors.
-Second one is opensite explorer. Gain backlinks and keyword used by your competitor and simply follow them. Put your link next to the competitor backlinks.
-SmallSEOtool is one of my favorite to get latest backlinks and count total backlinks(you can also find do-follow backlinks by this tools)

Backlink is one important factor for ranking good one that is why you have to analyze competitors' backlinks. Search the quantity, origin, anchor text and you will see your opponents strong or weak.
Normally after analysis is complete you will find your keyword ideas (like the rival SEO keywords that you do not know, ...) and the origin of the backlink from that opponent has more resources backlink to your site (if possible) and you can learn how to build your links manually.

Tools for purpose to analysis backlinks from competitors, you can use tools like Semrush, ahrefs, backlinks checkers..etc.

As of alexa free tools - they have a limited functionality and if you don't pay 10 bucks a month you won't see enough data to analyze your competitor's backlinks.

You're right. Alexa will not give you more result if you are on free membership...

If you have back links data for your competitor, use this tool.

NO, You're dead wrong! You just can't get full backlinks report of competitor's website through free version of Alexa.
Secondly, Are you serious ? OPEN SITE EXPLORER...you can use them only thrice a day and they are outdated !
