How to rank our listing in google places for a particular keyword? Is there any activities involved for this?

According to me you can have good traffic from Google places if you optimize the best for your information on it.
To do that, you need to join googple places and submit your listing by follow some steps below

First you visit http://google.com/places address, select Get started now to proceed with the registration of the business information on Google Places
Sign in with your Gmail account if you have or click on Sign up now for a new registration.
After login successfully you select the Add button next new business.

Next, you need to provide the information requested service, in which you notice the following information

Phone Number: You need to type your correct phone number because Google will use this number to check if you have the right to declare.

Location on the map: You must use the zoom feature and select your address on the map exactly. If you use an iPhone/iPad, it is very convenient to check your current location.

The keywords/categories: You need to enter/select the right keywords for your products and services to you. This will help to close the client if you can find you through the search function on their smartphones.

Opening hours : Accepts payment: cash, credit cards ....

Completed the information above, click the Fix incorrect marker location, drag the marker on the map button to the right with your address and then click Save Changes.

Next click button

Click on Add listing in page appears.

To complete and enrich information for the company, you should add a picture representing the company in Photos and movies in the company introduced Videos.

After declaring the information, click on the Submit button to send. Google offers two forms of confirmation that Google is waiting for a call directly to the applicant (By phone) or you will receive a message containing sequence confirmation from Google (By SMS).

Upon receiving the message "Thank you! ..." Means you have successfully logged information. Within a day of this information will be posted on Google Places. To check the results show how you log back into Google Places, click on See your listing line on Google Maps.

Michel is right. You will also add meta geo position and geo placename tag in your header.
