How to name my Hostname in VPS?

Hello,

I am in the process of studying and purchasing a new VPS,and I am confusing about Hostname.
Can anyone explain How to name my hostname in VPS exactly and It can affect email server configuration, DNS records..etc?

for example:
I have a domain name: example.com then how do I should name for my hostname?

hostname can be named:
myname
myname.example.com
example.com
www.example.com

which is right?
Anyone has more experience about hosting, please suggest me.

news.mysite.com is a hostname.
mysite.com is a hostname.
www .mysite.com is a hostname.
blogs.news.mysite.com is a hostname

A lot of hosting providers names hostnames: subdomains. That's the confusion...

It is a name which is used to refer to a specific host.

About a simple hostname (i.e. only "joe"): If someone has their own network with private domain name (for internal using - non-public domains), then they can make a hostname be something as simple as just 'joe' if they want and that can could be considered fully qualified. Only few have own private network.

For VPS: usually, the server hostname is set for the installation of server control panel. (For example, at us, if someone is buying a VPS, he must set a hostname, so if he opted for our own free hosting control panel, the hostname will be the location of panel. So, it must be something.yourdomainname.com)

it`s a popular to set hostname in this way

server1.yourdomain.com for nest serer put server2.yourdomain.com and do not forget to set A record for server1on server IP

On Centos you need to edit this files to set hostname
/etc/hosts
/etc/sysconfig/network

And reboot server.

Also do not frget to set rDNS record for you server IP.
