It's important to read UX design blogs daily, also learn to use Illustrator or Sketch for prototyping, check design examples from Dribbble or similar sites and overall experiment, making real small projects and asking to your friends or family to test them to know what can be improved. Perhaps some of those designs will be useful in a bigger project.

The real skill of a UX designer is to be able to look at a website or service and be able to understand how the user should progress. Where does the user start? Where do they go after they read an article? What are the entry points and what action do you want the user to take?

Once you understand the answers to these questions, you can use your design skills to create an environment, which makes it easy and pleasurable for the user.

I would also recommend purchasing a strong foundational video course on the topic from Udemy or an expert.
