Dude all you have to do is to make the On-page SEO perfect. Check the complete On-page activities what have you done before and based on that correct your optimization. Once everything is done just some social media signals. And one more tips! more traffic makes the Google to give more priority to your website.
Perfect On-page SEO is far from all you have to do. & Traffic doesn't make Google give any sort of priority to your rankings.

Results depend on competition of keywords? Is there any documentation that validates your statement?
Well - It's easier to achieve results depending on the competition of the keywords. What are you going to rank faster for the keyword "weight loss" or "weight loss for people over 300lbs"

So yes, results will depend on the competition.

Well, It is a long process to be on the first page of the SERP and there are many techniques that you can follow to be on SERP. Firstly, I recommend to you to do is make a list of the first 10 results on serp. Then analyze those results:

- What kind of content they have?
- How many backlinks do they have?
- What sites do those backlinks come from?
- What keywords do they use in their headers?
- What's the keyword density of those pages for your search terms?

Now try to create better content for user's, get similar backlinks and use keywords too. That should dramatically increase your chances to get in the top 10.
