I wrote a few months ago about how AI was changing the way people search for things online, but the technology is evolving so quickly that I found some information worth discussing further here related to that topic.

So, ChatGPT has been getting it's search results from Bing search and the newly launched SearchGPT will further extend that. Plus, you have the Microsoft Windows Co-Pilot built right into the new computers doing essentially the same thing.

On top of that, word on the street is that Google search is becoming much more social friendly, and may become a social hub itself at some point, but right now is heavily favoring social sites in its results pages. I know every time I search for something in Google now the top results are usually sites like Reddit, Quora, and the like.

Many site owners and businesses are now reporting they are getting leads directly from ChatGPT, as long as they are already in Bing, but not so much from Google. Personally, even though Bing gets a lot less traffic than Google, I find the results better, as Bing users are older (over 50) and more likely to be responsive to older style, simple, advertising, whereas Google is full of information junkies and freebie seekers. Not always, but still worth considering.

So, the overall question then would be is it more important now to rank in Bing than in Google, given the future focus on AI results? Most people find they can either rank in one or the other, but not both, so which one would you choose? Also, consider that Bing is easier to rank in, since their algorithm still uses rules from many years ago. Basically, you rank for the keyword phrase you want to rank for. Less traffic, yes, but better leads with less effort as well.

Thoughts?

Great points! It’s clear that the search landscape is shifting fast, especially with AI like ChatGPT and Bing making waves. I agree that Bing is easier to rank in, and if you’re aiming for quality leads, it might be worth focusing on that, especially since the audience tends to be more responsive. But Google still dominates in terms of traffic, and with its social-friendly shift, it’s likely to stay relevant. If you can manage to rank well in both, that’s ideal, but if you had to choose, focusing on Bing might give you more targeted leads with less competition—especially if you’re targeting an older demographic.

In 2024, SEO trends will emphasize AI integration, voice search optimization, and improved user experience. Key developments include the rise of zero-click searches, where users find answers directly on SERPs, necessitating businesses to optimize for featured snippets. The focus on Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) will be crucial, requiring content to reflect genuine expertise. Social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube are becoming alternative search engines, prompting brands to optimize their content accordingly. Regularly updating existing content and focusing on long-tail keywords will help maintain relevance. Ethical practices and sustainability will also influence SEO performance. Additionally, user experience factors such as page speed and mobile-friendliness will be prioritized. Video SEO will gain importance as video consumption rises, and local SEO strategies will be essential for businesses targeting nearby customers. Adapting to these trends will enable businesses to enhance their online visibility effectively.
