According to me YouTube is not a Social Media Sites. We used it to share videos and relatively learn something from video tutorials. If we consider only this features as social networking site than it probably not a good idea.

Youtube is not as connecting as social media sites like facebook or twitter for example. If you want to see what someone is up to you wouldn't check out their youtube page and expect they made a video of what they had for breakfast. In fact most people i know don't post videos on youtube at all... Its more purpose specific, so if you want to share your music, or have a video blog etc... so it doesn't have the function as facebook and twitter, but is still in the spectrum of social media sites.
